Make Every Mile a Safe One: Running Safety Month

November is National Running Safety Month! This is the perfect time to ensure that your running mindset prioritizes staying visible, aware of your surroundings, and feeling comfortable with your routes and gear.

Here are some tips and products to help you feel safe on your next run!

Tips:

Be visible! Wear bright or reflective clothing, especially when running at dusk, dawn, or nighttime. Lights attached to your clothing are also great for keeping you visible to drivers.

Bring your phone! In case of emergency, it’s important to have a way of immediately contacting someone. You can also have your location shared with a friend or family member to keep an eye on you.

Be aware of your surroundings! Keep your music volume low, and double check that no cars are coming before you cross any roads. Use headphones like Shokz whose open ear concept allows for total awareness of surroundings for a safe and connected listening experience.

Run with a buddy or group! You can look into joining some local run clubs to keep you from logging your miles alone.

Stay hydrated and know the weather for your run!

Rest as needed! Rest is part of safety, as fatigue can make you less alert.

Products:

Luna Fire 250 RX Chest/Waist Light
This lightweight, comfortable strap is easily adjustable to most securely fit your chest or waist. The light can also be unclipped from its strap to clip onto something else (shorts, hydration pack, etc.) to allow you to angle the beam of light in a way that makes you feel safest and most comfortable.
This product will help you see your surroundings better during your dark early morning or late-night runs and will make you more visible to vehicles moving in your direction.

NATHAN SaferRun Ripcord Siren Personal Alarm
This device can blast an alarm loud enough to be heard from over 600 feet away with the simple pull of a tab. It is also reusable, so even though you hope to never have to use it, you can test it ahead of time just in case.
The siren is intended to deter harm or to alert others to your location in the case of an incident.

Reflective Hats by BOCO Gear and Sprints
Lightweight, reflective material hats are intended to keep you visible during your dusk and dawn runs.
