Fueling Movement: How AdventHealth’s “Food as Medicine” Can Power Your Performance

The AdventHealth Corporate 5K is more than just a race—it’s a celebration of health, wellness, and community. Whether you're walking, jogging, or running, the food you eat matters just as much as your training. At AdventHealth, we believe in “Food as Medicine”—using whole, nutritious foods to optimize energy, support recovery, and promote long-term health.

With the support of Second Harvest Food Bank’s Culinary Training Program, we’re making it easier for everyone—whether elite runners or casual walkers—to eat for performance and well-being.

The Power of Food for Runners and Walkers

Nutrition plays a crucial role in boosting endurance, preventing injury, and aiding recovery. Here’s how you can harness the healing power of food leading up to race day:

1. Carbs Are Your Friend (Choose the Right Ones!)
Whole grains, sweet potatoes, and legumes provide slow-releasing energy that will sustain you throughout the 5K. Instead of processed carbs, opt for quinoa, oats, and whole-wheat pasta in your pre-race meals.

2. Hydration is More Than Just Water
Drinking plenty of water is key, but electrolytes (like sodium, potassium, and magnesium) are equally important. Coconut water, bananas, avocados, and leafy greens can help replenish these vital minerals.

3. Protein for Strength and Recovery
Lean proteins—such as grilled chicken, salmon, eggs, and plant-based options like lentils—help repair muscles and reduce soreness post-race.

4. Healthy Fats for Endurance
Don’t shy away from nuts, seeds, olive oil, and avocado. These fats provide long-lasting energy and help fight inflammation.

5. Timing Your Meals for Peak Performance
- Night before: A balanced meal with complex carbs, lean protein, and healthy fats (e.g., grilled salmon, quinoa, and roasted veggies).
- Race day morning: Light, easy-to-digest foods like oatmeal with fruit or a banana with nut butter.
- Post-race recovery: A mix of protein and carbs—Greek yogurt with berries, or eggs with whole-grain toast.

AdventHealth & Second Harvest: Nourishing the Community

Our commitment to “Food as Medicine” goes beyond race day. Through Second Harvest Food Bank’s Culinary Training Program, we’re ensuring that healthy, nourishing meals are accessible to underserved communities—because wellness should be for everyone, not just those who can afford it.

By focusing on education and access, we’re empowering more individuals and families to make nutritious choices that support lifelong health.

Want to get involved? Consider donating to Second Harvest or joining us at a future AdventHealth cooking class, where you’ll learn how to fuel your body with healing, whole foods.
