You Won’t Believe What’s (Almost) Back!
This morning, I ran in the new Brooks Convertible 2.0 Sports Bra! And, truly it is more like our old favorite, the Fiona Bra, than the original Dare Convertible Run Bra. They can’t seem to make up their mind…is it Run Bra or Sports Bra? Never mind, that! This new bra is as close to the Fiona as nothing else! But it’s not quite there.
Let’s look at the history of the Fiona bra. It was a ladies “go to” bra and friend for many years and then all of a sudden three years ago - GONE! I questioned the apparel team at a conference when I heard the news. These young women decided that “real” runners didn’t need support and decided to copy the trend of the Lululemon bras. I guess it took a couple years, and they finally realized they were wrong. Of course, I told them that three years ago. But I’m happy they figured it out!
Unfortunately, the Brooks Dare line, even the Convertible style didn’t give the support of the Fiona. The fabrics felt great but not as supportive. But the Convertible was working okay… Just okay. After my run this morning, I’m happy to report that the Convertible 2.0 is getting close! YAY. Still a couple issues with the seam near the hooks, and the convertible attachment is a little tougher to do than the original bra was. The straps are adjustable and much thicker and comfortable than the previous style. And, they seem to stay in place and not slide as the other did. But can anyone explain why we must always tear off 4 tags and then are left with a bra without the size on it?
I’m still a fan of the Anita Active bra, one I discovered at The Running Event a few years ago when searching for something to replace the Fiona. For me, living in a southeastern state where the heat and humidity are high, I feel a lighter fabric makes a huge difference and this definitely meets that criteria, plus it’s a beautifully made bra and truly supports! The cups separate your breasts (different than the Convertible) and feels quite tight when first put on but is fantastic for support. The Brooks bra retails for $60 and is initially more comfortable. The Anita Active bra retails for $80 and if always washed correctly, hooks clasped and no fabric softner and air dryed both will last for literally years. Both bras run true to size! But do ask for a fitting when shopping!
Betsy Hughes is co-owner of Track Shack of Orlando and has been fitting shoes AND bras for 45 years! Also note, she was not gifted the new Brooks bra. But that’s ok (she really likes it.)
