SimplyIOA Insurance Tip: Driving down the cost of teen auto insurance

It's good to have friends 'in the know'. Our IOA Corporate 5k partners at SimplyIOA provided helpful tips for parents adding young drivers to their coverage.

When your teen passes their driving test for the first time, they feel elated; they have gained freedom, independence, and the important responsibility of driving with extreme care and attention. As a parent of a new driver, you start shopping around for the perfect car and auto insurance for your teen. The harsh reality quickly sets in that getting them on the road can be expensive.

Insurance can be confusing, complicated, and expensive. Even if your teen is just learning to drive, you legally need insurance coverage before they get behind the wheel. It doesn’t matter if you’re going to the store down the street or college in another state, insurance is required. Adding young drivers to your plan sometimes means than the average driver does, but there are a few ways to help reduce the cost. Here is our best advice.

Choose a sensible first car

Your teen’s first car does not have to be powerful, fast, or brand new. A practical and reliable car is a perfect fit for them to gain the confidence and experience needed to get from point A to point B safely.

Ask a parent

Teenage drivers can benefit from having an older and more experienced driver on their insurance policy, commonly known as a named driver. Having a named driver who isn’t ‘high risk’ reassures insurers that you are not solely responsible for the vehicle should an accident occur. You may also be able to take advantage of discounts given to more experienced drivers, such as covering multiple cars, going paperless, and using automatic payments.

Drive safe

Some insurance providers offer discounts based on driver behavior. The insurance industry refers to this as telematics or more commonly known as a device that is installed on your vehicle or downloaded to your phone. These devices monitor driving behavior, including speed and distance traveled, meaning the safer your teen drives, the more likely you will be eligible for driver discounts.

Shop around

As with any insurance, keep in mind that the cheapest option isn’t always the best option.
