Months of training, and intra-office inspiration culminated with a mission of health and fitness to line the streets of downtown Orlando last night with more than 11,000 runners and walkers at the 15th Annual Corporate 5k presented by IOA. Cheering fans and local businesses welcomed over 540 teams back to the familiar setting at Lake Eola.
“There were high fives and cheers as participants crossed the finish line with teammates and friends,” said Betsy Hughes co-owner of Track Shack. “The beauty of downtown Orlando’s sunset skyline was second only to the excitement that filled the air!”
Pat Marshall of the YMCA led all runners with his blistering time and course record of 15:58. “All things considered I was happy with my race. The new course was great . . . we had crowd support lining most of the course and that always helps,” said Marshall. “I was also lucky to have Daniel Conn pushing me the entire race.”
Track Shack’s Sarah Robertson ran 19:42 to become the women’s overall winner. These are repeat victories for Marshall and Robertson who both won this event in 2007. “It was a great course,” said Robertson. “At the start I didn’t see anyone who I’d raced against so I just ran as hard as I could. I loved the last half-mile with the band and people cheering.”
In addition to the overall winners, local CEOs represented their teams well as models of health and fitness. Michael Day of Reliable Leasing, returned as the overall male CEO Champion with a time of 17:33. Anne Stokes of Southeastern Archaeological Research, Inc. ran to her first victory as the overall female CEO with a time of 23:07.
More than 275 volunteers from individuals and groups such as the Orlando Runners Club and the Parramore Kidz Zone provided enthusiastic support for participants, serving water, encouraging recycling and greeting runners around Lake Eola. Corporate 5k means something different for everyone – whether it’s a person’s first 5k or it’s been awhile since they’ve run, this year’s run/walk was a memorable time for health and fitness for all involved. There are incredible stories of challenges and adversities that some of our participants had to overcome, just to be a part of Corporate 5k.
