July 4th Watermelon 5k Run/Walk at Mead Garden

Runners/walkers support local Soldiers serving in Iraq through supply drive and messages of encouragement

Over 2000 runners, walkers and fitness enthusiasts of all ages will kick off their holiday celebration by participating in the July 4th Watermelon 5k, Wednesday, July 4th at Mead Garden in Winter Park.

The 3.1-mile run/walk begins at 7:30 a.m. followed by the kids’ run at 8:45 a.m.

This year, the Track Shack Foundation and Central Florida’s fitness community are supporting the 329th Chemical Platoon, a local reservist unit, who are on their 7-month of a 12-month tour in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom. The platoon consists of 30 Soldiers, 18 of the 30 personnel are from the Central Florida area and the other Soldiers are from the surrounding Atlanta, GA area. Participants are asked to donate phone cards and DVDs for the Soldiers. Runners and walkers will also have a chance to write personal greetings. All items and notes of support will be collected prior to the race at Track Shack and on race day. Items will be sent to members of the 329th Chemical Platoon.

Proceeds benefit the Track Shack Foundation, a 501 ©(3) organization established to promote health and fitness with an emphasis on youth athletics.

Other events and activities include a special visit from the 2007 Florida Watermelon Queen, Tara Mashburn who will be on hand to start the race and judge the watermelon-eating contest.

5 men & 5 women will be chosen to participate in our 1st Annual Watermelon Eating Contest. Contest will begin at 8:30 am. All contestants should report to the Track Shack tent. All interested participants may sign up on race day at the Track Shack tent. Contestant names will be randomly selected and announced at 8:20 am. Top male and female winners will receive a crown and festive watermelon merchandise.
