Team Spotlight: Orange County Sheriff’s Office

The Orange County Sheriff’s Office (OCSO) has a long-standing tradition of participating in the AdventHealth Corporate 5k. For the past 11 years, over 100 employees have united to celebrate workplace wellness, camaraderie, and team spirit.
Valerie Reed, team captain for the Orange County Sheriff’s Office team, offers practical tips for companies of all sizes to embrace this workplace wellness initiative and enjoy the process!
Q: What are some incentives the OSCO uses to encourage participation in the Corporate 5k?
A: We encourage this event by highlighting the team camaraderie. Being in a large organization, not everyone gets to see their colleagues as often as they would like so this is an opportunity to get together and do something fun! The Sheriff's Office covers participant registration, provides everyone with a team shirt, and offers food after the race. This event also counts as an approved event to earn points toward an incentive program connected to our health insurance.
Q: How does OSCO use Corporate 5k for strategic business purposes?
A: Corporate 5k is a way to give back to an outstanding cause. It also allows our employees to run side-by-side with the community they serve. Being out of uniform and in running shoes running (and walking) alongside our neighbors is a great way to show unity. We all want this community to be a better place! This event is a way for all of us to come together. Additionally, Safety and Wellness is in Sheriff Mina’s values. Law Enforcement can be a stressful job at times so encouraging movement and activity is a great way to shake off some of that stress. Events such as these keep our employees active, which results in a physically and mentally heathier workforce.
A: Workplace wellness is a huge part of the Orange County Sheriff's Office. Safety and Wellness are incorporated in Sheriff Mina's values and all employees are reminded of this at every annual training and new hire orientation. The Sheriff values wellness so much we have a full-time, in-house wellness team that is tasked with supporting and promoting the physical wellness, mental wellness, financial wellness, and relational wellness of our employees. We have on-site fitness centers, direct mental health support, financial wellness opportunities, and many family events. When an employee is well, they are happier and healthier. Not only is this the right thing to do, but they also perform better at their job when they are well. OCSO is proud to support the well-being of our employees.
Q: Who participates on the OSCO’s AdventHealth Corporate 5k team?
A: Employees, Friends and Family
Q: Is there anything you’d like to share about OSCO’s experience at the Corporate 5k? (e.g. your team's favorite memory of the event, your t-shirt design process, post-race party, etc.)
A: We have always enjoyed this event, it is one of our largest wellness events of the year! Sheriff Mina leads from the front, regularly finishing in the top handful of all executives at the race.
Held exclusively for Florida's corporate community; businesses and non-profit organizations form teams and participate in the AdventHealth Corporate 5k for camaraderie, friendly competition and celebrating with co-workers.
